The Gift of Getting Called Out

I let an action item deadline slip.  My coach noticed as much, and sent me a friendly email on the matter.  It said:

I’m clear that you are on track to complete the actions we talked about today. That said, how would you like me to respond to overdue action notifications?

  1. Ignore unless I have a concern
  2. Give you a gentle ribbing
  3. Send you a stern voice memo
  4. A hybrid/random mix of 1-3

I loved getting this email.  It’s a gift to be called out.  It reminds you that someone cares, that doing what you said matters.

(In case you were wondering I opted for option 4, being not just a little excited to receive the occasional stern voice memo because my coach a bit of a smart-ass who can bring genuine humor and levity to matters of addressing failure. 🙂

With notifications delivered to you via email or text, you’ll know immediately when a deadline slipped for your client.  From there, a simple reply is all it takes to pass on whatever calling out is appropriate.

Easy and quick, and a gift to your client.
