Being a Genius Truly in Their World

My father-in-law is a genius when it comes to being handy.  If there’s anything wrong around the house, I’m grateful to have him as my phone-a-friend and I always know with his help I’m in good hands and on the right track.

Ever been around someone who’s a genius and on your side, lending their brilliance to genuinely help you out?  It’s a wonderful feeling: you’re eager for their input, and ready to trust and put into action whatever they recommend.

So how do you be a genius like that for your clients?

To do that, start with the Teddy Roosevelt quote:  “Nobody cares what you know until they know how much you care.”

We don’t care how smart you are, how many books you’ve read (or written), how many degrees or certifications you have.  That might help when we’re haplessly looking for reliable signals among the brochures, trying to choose a coach that’s hopefully good.  But in the moment of being coached by you, none of that matters.

What makes you a genius to us is you really getting us, tracking with us; aware of where we’ve been, what we’re dealing with, the place we want to get to, and the progress we’ve made.

Do this by showing up to our calls aware of:

  • what we talked about last,
  • what we were working on,
  • what’s done and what’s not,
  • what our goals are and how it’s been going, and
  • the big picture of what we’re playing for.

You being really aware of what’s so for us and demonstrating how in our world you are is what has you show up like a trustworthy genius.  It makes us really trust you know what you’re talking about, and eager to receive your input.
