One of the greatest gifts you can give your clients are notes from the sessions you have.
If you don’t fancy yourself much of a writer when it comes to composing Session Notes, don’t worry. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece to be a profound gift. It doesn’t even have to be long.
It can be as simple as 1-3 sentences. 1-3 of what I’ll call key insights.
Key insights are those moments in the session where one of you said something that called for an immediate pause, that moment where the conversation palpably shifted. Maybe they’re a profound truth that changes everything, or maybe they’re just the recognition of a simple truth, or an inspired new perspective or line of action. (One of mine was the simple observation that I’d rather be an artist than an art teacher, which made that conversation an uncommonly well spent $1000.)
These insights reliably arise during coaching conversations. Not in great quantity: seldom more than three, but usually at least one. They represent the crux of what got accomplished or created in a session. When you strip away the story, they usually reduce to a single sentence.
If you do nothing more than capture these insights as single sentences and share them with your clients, you with have already succeeded in giving your clients that gift.
Not only will you make it easy for them to carry forward and stay present to (and thus take action upon!) those key insights, but they’ll have them forever, readily available to peruse and recall.
The beauty of taking and sharing such a succinct account of your sessions is that it makes it more likely your client will actually review them. They don’t have to wade through a lot of cruft, like they would with a clumsy AI summary (or God-forbid an entire recording or transcript) to recall what really mattered.
A neat thing about human memory is that a single phrase can unlock our recall of an entire conversation, one which might otherwise be effectively lost. Not outright forgotten, but simply inaccessible in the absence of anything prompting us to recall it.
When it comes to your past sessions, just 1-3 sentences are all that separates growing appreciation from total oblivion.
